From thrilling expert slopes to beginner-friendly runs, there’s something for everyone. Pass options include single-day tickets, multi-day passes, and season passes for frequent visitors.
For 2025-2026: Don’t forget about the Premier Pass for unlimited access, or consider the Alpine Pass, which allows skiing two days per week, along with discounted rates for students and seniors. You can find something that fits your itinerary and budget with flexible pricing and multi-day discounts.
TRANSPORT
Aspen’s public transportation is unbeatable for a mountain town! Getting to the mountains is a breeze whether you’re staying slopeside or in town. Free bus services run frequently from Rubey Park Station in downtown Aspen to all four mountains. Are you heading to Snowmass? Buses depart every 15-30 minutes, with plenty of room for your gear. Plus, the Aspen Downtowner is perfect for quick, free shuttle rides around town, including to the base of Aspen Mountain.
SKI GEAR
No gear? No problem! While many visitors prefer to bring their own, Aspen has no shortage of equipment rental options. Four Mountain Sports offers gear rentals at all four mountains, making it super convenient. Did you forget to pack something? You can also find ski wear, boots, and helmets for rent. Other great rental spots include Incline, SureFoot, and Aspen Sports.
Pro Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, stop by the Aspen Thrift Shop for budget-friendly, second-hand ski gear. It’s a local favorite for hidden gems.
Simplify Your Ski Day
Make your day on the slopes stress-free with snowboard and ski storage at the Aspen Ski Lounge. OUR FAVORITE AREAS AND RUNS FOR A PERFECT DAY ON EACH MOUNTAIN
You’ve planned and secured your gear and are now ready to explore Aspen’s legendary slopes. Here are some local recommendations for a perfect day on Aspen’s four mountains.
ASPEN MOUNTAIN (Ajax): LEGENDARY SKIING IN THE HEART OF TOWN
Overlooking downtown Aspen, Aspen Mountain offers steep, thrilling runs for intermediate to expert skiers. Start your day on Silver Bell before heading up to Ajax Express. Grab lunch at Bonnie’s—famous for its delicious pancakes—before seeking out powder stashes in Aspen Glades. Wrap up your day with a scenic top-to-bottom run-down Ruthie’s, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Roaring Fork Valley.
HIGHLANDS: BREATHTAKING, STEEP, AND WILD
Aspen Highland offers something different from the other mountains in Aspen. Some higher runs offer “in-bounds” backcountry skiing with steep powdery slopes. You should start the day with a quick run to wake yourself up before making the trek up to the top of The Highlands Bowl. Probably the most renowned area to ski in Aspen, the bowl offers thrilling, steep skiing with incredible panoramic views, as good as anywhere in the world. We usually head earlier in the day, as the hike is a real leg-burner, and you also want to get there before anyone has skied the fresh snow. After you’ve worked up a sweat, stop at Merry-Go-Round for a refreshing drink and a delicious bite. If you’re feeling a little more festive, join the party at Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, known for spraying bottles of champagne.
BUTTERMILK: BEGINNERS PARADISE
Buttermilk is considered the most manageable mountain in terms of terrain, with trails to suit every experience level. West Buttermilk is an excellent mountain area for quick blue and green runs. We love starting our day up there. The runs are spacious and quiet, with great options for different levels. Why not test your skills on the features in the terrain park? On the eastern side of Buttermilk, we love to descend on Racer’s Edge to the Tiehack Express, giving you access to more challenging runs. After a day on the slopes, unwind with a drink and some great food at Home Team BBQ.
SNOWMASS: WIDE OPEN, WONDERFUL, AND INVITING
Snowmass is the largest of the four mountains, and hence, it has everything from beginner-level slopes to off-piste-style terrain. There is so much to explore, but we’ll break down our ideal day as best we can. Start your day on the Village Express with some groomed runs on Banzai Ridge and Moonshine. Refuel with some food at Sam’s, which offers fantastic Italian cuisine atop the mountain with updated interiors and enhanced views. After re-energizing, cross the mountain until you eventually make it to the Elk Camp side. It will take some time and a few different lifts, but it’s the best way to explore Snowmass Mountain, in our opinion.
Make your way to the thrilling Long Shot Trail to finish off. A little hike from the Elk Camp chairlift gives you access to one continuous blue run down to the Two Creeks lift. It’s filled with bump sections and technical tree trails. After this, you’ll have earned a drink, so hit up Venga Venga for some aprés-ski celebrations. Also, watch for the free S’more stations in Snowmass Base Village / Snowmass Mall, which occur daily at 3:30 PM.
More Ski Tips for Aspen Snowmass: How to Have More Fun on the Hill
First Tracks
There’s truly nothing that compares to catching those first tracks in the morning after a fresh snowfall. Getting up early to try and beat the crowds is so rewarding, and being the first to hit either the morning corduroy or untouched powder is truly a privilege. The first gondola departs at 8:00 AM, so gear up for an early start! Catching first tracks is the ultimate way to experience pristine morning powder or perfectly groomed runs. Book at least 48 hours in advance to secure your early-morning spot and savor the thrill of having the mountain to yourself!
Shrine Hunting
Across all four mountains in Aspen, people have set up shrines for everything from dogs to celebrities and even countries. Shrines are little areas hidden in the hills decorated with items related to whatever they are celebrating. Often, amongst the trees, you will find a tucked away seat with the branches around them covered in pictures, ornaments, and personal belongings. Many shrines are scattered across the mountains, each offering a unique hidden gem to discover. Shrine hunting is an exciting way to blend your ski runs with some exploration. You can find a complete list, along with some maps here. Local favorites include the Jerry Garcia Shrine and the Elvis Presley Shrine on Aspen Mountain and the Monkey Lounge Shrine at Highlands. Next time you’re skiing, why not detour through the trees and see what hidden gems you can uncover?
OTHER SKIING ACTIVITIES: ADD SOME VARIETY TO YOUR OUTINGS
Are you looking for something different to do in Aspen and Snowmass this winter besides alpine skiing or snowboarding?
Maybe you’re a little bored with the slopes. Or perhaps you’re planning a mountain vacation but aren’t sure you want to deal with crowded lift lines and busy on-mountain restaurants. Try some of these other ski-based activities for something a little different this year.
Uphill Skiing or “Skinning”

Uphill skiing is quickly becoming one of Aspen’s favorite pastimes. Skinning, often called this, was once a lesser-known activity among skiers but has become much more accessible to all skill levels in recent times. Skinning involves using a specific set of skis with a particular binding and a set of skins on the bottom, allowing you to hike uphill with your skis on. This activity provides a real workout and makes the descent even more rewarding. As they say, you’ve got to earn your turns. Uphill skiing in Aspen’s four mountains requires either a season pass or a specific uphill ski pass, which costs $74 for the season and provides access to dedicated uphill routes; Premier Passholders receive the Uphill Pass at no additional charge. This challenging workout gives you the reward of a well-earned descent after hiking uphill on your skis. To learn how to start skinning in Aspen, check out our complete guide to uphill skiing.
Cross-country
Cross-country skiing has always been present among the local community and experienced skiers, but its popularity remains strong. It is a perfect way to stay on the slopes with closed lifts. Cross-country skiing lets you explore Aspen’s stunning snow-covered trails on flatter terrain. If you plan to try it this winter, the Aspen Nordic system is one of the best, with about 60 miles of groomed trails—one of the largest free Nordic systems in the U.S. These scenic trails open in late November and run through mid‑ to late‑March (closing March 22, 2026), and no passes are required to access them. We love cross-country skiing because it offers an intense workout and opens up Aspen’s scenic trails that few others can experience. Want to get into cross-country skiing this winter? Browse our detailed guide on cross-country skiing in Aspen.
Hut Trips
In general, Aspen and Colorado benefit from an extensive hut system. These huts dot the backcountry in remote areas. Their isolation offers a chance for a unique adventure or a genuinely off-the-grid experience. Mountain huts provide an exceptional escape. Almost every hut will require you to snowshoe or ski the backcountry. Huts are available for online reservations, providing guests with an experience. Imagine you, your family, and your friends in a cozy cabin away from technology and noise—surrounded by excellent company in a serene mountain retreat. Every hut is armed with fireplaces, a kitchen, and comfortable living and sleeping areas. To plan your next backcountry adventure, visit the 10th Mountain Division Huts, which offer reservable huts for different group sizes and experiences. These secluded, cozy huts provide a unique winter escape, perfect for groups seeking tranquility away from the crowds.
